Year at a Glance
Theme:
Encouraging athletes to think while on the move! The sport of alpine ski racing involves athletes making many decisions while “on the fly” through a race course. Athletes should be practicing in a variety of circumstances with courses, and terrain, structured under competitive training situations in order to acquire the ability to “think while on the move”.
Goal 1: (MASS Program)To enhance abilities of our athletes to make critical reflections.
This involves innovative coaching methodology that encourages athletes to problem solve, review and reflect, in order to make decisions in relation to technical, tactical and psychological aspects of performance.
Summary:
Athlete critical reflection abilities were enhanced through the practice of the following:
Course variety
Course inspections with variety, reflections on how the course skied in relation to inspection thoughts. To have athletes reflect on their inspection observations.
inspections in smaller groups with less coach intervention
To more frequently, utilize timing equipment to provide feedback for our athletes.
Continue to utilize athlete journals, race day plans and goal setting.
Tuesday night reflections on previous weekend race/training opportunities.
Goal 2: (Snow Stars Goal) To enhance coach knowledge and the delivery of the Husky Snow Stars Program.
Summary:
In year two of the Snow Stars program delivery, coaches have reflected on some observations:
Nancy Green program continued to experience growth in the area of the Snow Stars delivery. Coaches were frequently observed referring to the manuals for; coverage of the program, and to monitor athlete success in relation to the specific criteria
Indoor PD sessions for coaches took place on Thursday evenings
Outdoor PD sessions (over and above those that were presented at the CSCF workshop in Banff and the CSIA workshop in Winnipeg) will be prioritized for next season for Summit coaches.
Information session for Summit parents in relation to Snow Stars program will be delivered in early season to enhance communication.
With new provincial delivery of Nancy Greene events, as well as K1/K2 and J1/J2 we will further explore the use of Snow Stars program for K1/K2 athletes.
A meeting of Summit coaches was recently conducted. Coaches collaborated to reflect on the past season’s goals and to provide ideas for next season as well as some thoughts for the development of the new Three Year Vision for Summit Ski Club … work in progress.

As developed and presented at Summit Executive Meeting in September 2005.
Background:
Whereas our younger athletes are training the FUNdamentals, and the JASS
athletes are training to become better at Training with some experience
in competition, more of our older athletes are Training to Compete. These
older athletes were beginning to focus more on what it takes to gain good
results in a race, and training more intensely to achieve this. Athletes
are acquiring more knowledge about line and tactics in courses and learning
mental skills to enhance their preparation for quality performance.
Note: This above information makes some reference to the terminology used
in the Alpine Integration Model (Alpine Canada and CSCF). A new AIM document
is in the planning.
2005-‘06
General:
The executive of Summit Ski Club will develop a plan for financial sustainability
to support a quality program being offered at a growing expense of such.

Nancy Greene Program
To continue the interface opportunities for stronger skilled Nancy Greene
athletes to train with their older athlete peers. Some of these younger
athletes will be encouraged to race at one MASS/JASS race, to be designated
as invitational race.
Continue emphasis on training the FUNdamentals
by including variety in training, presenting challenging situations through
guided discovery approaches and building strong mental skills.
Coaches will seek
to place extra training emphasis on “starts”.
Coaches to review
revised Husky Ski Skills Awards Program.
Executive to place
an emphasis increasing membership numbers to 37 at the Nancy
Greene level.
MASS Program
To provide the coaching support in order to meet the growth demands in
the JASS/MASS program. This year’s explosion in the numbers of athletes
provides an exciting opportunity.
To encourage Summit Coaches to provide opportunities for improving/enhancing
the mental skills of our coaches and athletes.
Continue emphasis on “train to train” at (11-14 yrs) with “train to compete” (14-15 plus yrs.). Within the training program we shall endeavor to provide heavy emphasis on physical abilities both on and off the snow in order for athletes to gain optimal skill/performance abilities.
To Nominate two athletes to MASD Juvenile Team to compete at K2 National
